How to Prevent Breakouts Before Hari Raya

This article is adapted from a news feature published in Berita Harian and includes insights shared by Dr. Jeanel, Medical Director of Alpha Asia Aesthetics.

As Hari Raya approaches, many people focus on looking and feeling their best. Clothes are prepared, homes are decorated, and calendars fill up with festive gatherings. In the middle of all that excitement, skincare can easily be overlooked, and that is often when breakouts begin to appear.

The days leading up to the festive season can bring several common acne triggers. Late nights, richer foods, sugary drinks, stress, and frequent use of makeup may all affect the skin. When routines become inconsistent, pores can become clogged more easily, which may lead to pimples and irritation.

A simple and consistent skincare routine is often more effective than trying too many new products at once. Gently cleansing the face, applying a lightweight moisturiser, and using sunscreen every day can help protect the skin barrier. For people who are prone to acne, non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products may be a better choice.

Small daily habits also matter. Changing pillowcases regularly, cleaning makeup brushes and sponges, and wiping down phone screens can help reduce exposure to oil, dirt, and bacteria. These simple steps may lower the chances of breakouts getting worse.

During the festive period, makeup is often worn for longer hours during visits and celebrations. It is important to remove makeup thoroughly at the end of the day so that product buildup does not remain on the skin overnight.

Lifestyle habits can also make a difference. Drinking enough water, getting adequate rest, and enjoying festive treats in moderation may help the skin stay healthier during a busy season. Stress management is also important, as emotional strain can sometimes affect skin condition.

One habit to avoid is squeezing or picking at pimples. Doing so may cause more inflammation, increase the risk of marks, and slow the healing process. For acne that is frequent, painful, or persistent, professional advice may be necessary.

Clear skin does not need to mean perfect skin. With a steady routine and better daily habits, it is possible to look fresh and feel more confident during the Hari Raya season.
